Cycling star still shining

Double Olympic medallist Chris Newton pedalled to an emphatic first place in the Teesside District 25-miles Time Trial Championships.

Newton, a team pursuit prize winner in Athens and Sydney, completed the blustery out-and-back Knayton course in 51min 41sec.

But the 30-year-old cycle star is not entitled to any silverware as his Team Persil squad is registered outside the area.

Hutton Rudby veteran Geoff Robinson (Cleveland Wheelers) scooped the 40-44-year-olds' prize with second place in 55min 14sec.

Fellow Teessider Simon Coates (Cleveland Wheelers) nailed the 30-39 age group trophy in fourth place on 57min 3sec.

And 17-year-old Simon Baxter (Bike Traks) claimed the incorporated Teesside Cycling Association junior gong as the only entrant in the category.

No riders entered the under-23 and 24 to 29 sections.

Result: 1, C Newton (Team Persil) 25 miles in 51min 41sec; 2, G Robinson (Cleve Whs) 55min 14sec; 3, M Wolstenholme (Pete Read Racing) 56min 51sec; 4, S Coates (Cleve Whs) 57min 3sec; 5, S Baxter (Bike Traks) 57min 25sec; 6, D Lund (Bike Traks) 57min 35sec; 7, W Thorpe (Brough Whs) 57min 43sec; 8, G Metcalfe (Otley) 57min 58sec; 9, A Cosgrove (Teesdale) 58min 38sec; 10, M Shacklock (Otley) 58min 45sec.

30-39: Coates.

40-44: Robinson.

45-49: J Gatenby (Teesdale) 1hr 5min 30sec.

50-59: D Campbell (Stockton Whs) 1hr 3min 3sec.

60-69: N Stewart (Stockton Whs) 1hr 7min 24sec.

Over-70s: A Harrison (Cleve Coureurs) 1hr 6min 49sec.

CARLTON BANK is the setting for Cleveland Wheelers' annual hill climb on Sunday (11am).

More than 30 riders pit themselves against the clock and the gradient, providing the best line-up since the club hosted the national title in 1996.

Form man Tim Bayley (Arctic Shorter) is among the favourites, alongside returning three-time former champion Shaun Tyson (Hartlepool CC).

Host club pair Simon Coates and Lewis Meadows should also be in contention, as well as Richmond and Darlington duo Steve Fullerton and Cameron Turner.

Endurance specialist Catherine Hare (Team Luciano) also makes a local appearance and will fight it out with Julia Bake and Hannah Conlin for the ladies' prize.
